Services: Usability Research and Testing

OTIVO has helped a variety of companies identify and remedy their Web site and Web application usability issues (as well as confirm that a site or application is perfectly usable!) with:

  • One-on-one user testing, research, interview sessions
  • Expert usability reviews
  • Comparative and competitive analyses

OTIVO's Usability Testing Process

  • Phase 1 Project Kickoff: meet to finalize objectives, goals, participant demographics, interview locations, reporting and recording requirements, timelines and deliverables. We'll meet with you in person to (1) review all available documentation to understand why people use (or would want to use) your site or application and (2) understand your goals.

  • Phase 2 Demographic Profile Screener and Recruiting: document and define who will be recruited in a screener and use the screener to recruit and schedule participants for the research. OTIVO will work with you to develop a carefully constructed set of criteria (the "screener") that identifies the right participants to represent your target audience.

  • Phase 3 Test Plan Development and Test Drive -- develop, edit and run a practice test of a test ("interview") plan or moderating/listening guide for use in interviewing participants. The test plan specifices how the research or test will be conducted, including the objectives and questions that our client would like to hear answered.

  • Phase 4 Participant Interviews and data collection -- moderate and video record individual interviews at our lab in San Francisco or at your lab or a rented facility in another city or in participants' offices or homes. You are encouraged to observe all or some of the sessions.

  • Phase 5 Report Development and Delivery of Findings: develop a quick summary and final reports of findings and recommendations with participant feedback. Edit and create highlights video with participant comments supporting the findings and recommendations in the written report.

How much does it cost? What do I get?

  1. Fast Usability Research: $2,000-5,000
    • 1-2 weeks
    • We recruit general users of the internet
    • You give us a few questions or objectives to focus on for a review of your live web site/application or new designs
    • We interview 6-7 participants in 30-45 minute interviews in our lab in San Francisco (you're welcome and encouraged to observe!) and pay cash incentives ($50-100 per participant)
    • We video record the interviews and give the video to you on CD or DVD 1-2 days after the interviews
    • We meet with you the day after the interviews to discuss the results (no report, just a meeting)

  2. Full Usability Research: $10,000-30,000
    • 2-4 weeks
    • We develop a screener for recruiting and recruit your specified demographic
    • We develop a project plan and test plan ("interview guide") for use in interviews or listening labs. You review and give us feedback. We meet with you to walkthrough the process and finalize the document.
    • We interview 6-18 participants in 50-60 minute interviews in our lab in San Francisco (you're welcome and encouraged to observe!) or at a lab or facility in any city or town. We pay cash incentives ($75-150 per participant) and take notes during the interviews.
    • We video record the interviews and give the video to you on CD or DVD 1-2 days after the interviews
    • We send you a short daily report of the day's findings via email at the end of each interview day
    • We analyze the results and develop a full report of findings and recommendations.
    • We edit the 6-18 hours of video to create a highlights video that substantiates the report.
    • We meet with you to present and discuss the findings and recommendations.

  3. Multiple Iterations of Research: $30,000 and up
    • 5+ weeks
    • Multiple iterations of the "Full Usability Research" described above
    • Often in multiple cities
    • Often with surveying and data collection between iterations and bringing participants back to participate in a usability session more than once.
