You can hold life insurance inside your super or outside it, and the choice affects more than where the policy sits. It changes how you pay for it, how flexible the cover is, and even which types of cover you can access. Many people hold cover in super without ever weighing the alternative. Here's how the two approaches compare, so the choice is a considered one.
Quick answer
Life insurance inside super is convenient, with premiums paid from your super balance, but it can reduce your retirement savings and comes with more limited, default-style cover. Outside super, you pay premiums from your own pocket but gain more flexibility and access to cover types not available in super. As at July 2026, many people use a combination of both.
How does paying for the cover differ?
The funding source is the first difference. Inside super, premiums are deducted from your super balance, so you don't pay out of your everyday cash flow, which is convenient. Outside super, you pay premiums directly from your own money. The trade-off is that premiums paid from your super balance quietly reduce the amount growing for your retirement, whereas premiums paid outside super leave your retirement savings untouched but cost you in day-to-day cash flow. Neither is free, they just draw from different pockets.
What are the advantages of holding it inside super?
Convenience and cash flow, mainly. Cover inside super is often arranged as default insurance with no active effort, the premiums come from your balance rather than your take-home pay, and funds can offer cost-effective cover through bulk arrangements. For people who might otherwise never get around to arranging cover, or who prefer not to pay premiums from their everyday budget, holding life insurance in super is a convenient way to have protection in place.
What are the advantages of holding it outside super?
Flexibility and choice. Cover held outside super can be tailored more closely to your needs, tends to offer higher levels and more features, and gives you access to types of cover not available inside super. Notably, trauma cover has not been available inside super for new policies since July 2014, so anyone wanting it holds it outside super. Because you're arranging and paying for it directly, you generally have more control over the amount and structure of the cover.
How does the tax and payout side compare?
There are differences worth understanding in general terms. Premiums and payouts can be treated differently depending on whether cover is inside or outside super, and inside super, a death benefit is paid through the super system, subject to the rules on who can receive it and how it's taxed depending on the recipient. Outside super, the cover pays according to the policy. Because these details can be complex and depend on your circumstances, they're worth checking rather than assuming, and they can influence which approach suits.
Which tends to suit which situation?
Holding cover in super suits those who value convenience, want premiums out of their balance rather than their budget, and are comfortable with default-style cover. Holding it outside suits those who want tailored, higher or specialised cover such as trauma, and are willing to pay premiums directly for that flexibility. Many people use both, keeping convenient baseline cover in super while topping up outside it. What suits you depends on your needs, budget and how the premiums affect your retirement savings.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to have life insurance inside or outside super?
Neither is universally better. Inside super is convenient with premiums from your balance but can reduce retirement savings and offers more limited cover. Outside super is more flexible with more cover types but is paid from your own pocket. Many people use both.
Does life insurance in super reduce my retirement savings?
Yes. Premiums for cover held in super are deducted from your balance, so they reduce the amount growing for retirement over time. That's worth weighing against the convenience of not paying from your everyday budget.
Can I get trauma cover inside super?
No. Trauma cover has not been available inside super for new policies since July 2014, so it's held outside super. This is one reason some people hold cover outside super in addition to any default cover inside it.
Where to from here
The right side depends on how you weigh convenience against flexibility and cost.
